Winter, and all of its soupy comfort foods, are behind us. With Memorial Day around the corner, its time to start firing up grills and hanging out in the sunshine!
A few summers ago, my husband and I decided that we needed to have an easy way to invite people to our home. It can be so easy to say, “We’re just too busy” and just go along in our own little bubble. The bubble is easy and comfortable, but can get boring and lonely. So we decided to have a weekly burger night and it was the perfect opportunity to invite people in. Every Saturday or Sunday afternoon, depending on the weather, we were making burgers. No matter what. It because so easy to invite people into something we had already planned to do. “Hey, we’re making burgers tonight. Want to come over?” People love burgers, so usually it was a “Yes”. But if not, it wasn’t a big loss because we still got burgers. It was a really low risk way of hosting. It wasn’t some crazy cook out. Just burgers. Sometimes I would make them myself, like the Basic Burgers recipe below, and sometimes they were frozen from Costco. I would make a salad or bake some fries, but I would also try to leave room for whoever was joining us to bring something. I think allowing your guests to contribute creates a more relaxed vibe, and it takes some of the burden off of your shoulders as well. And if you aren’t feeling burdened, then this habit of hosting will be more sustainable! It was great, and now whenever it starts warming up, even though I’m a real big introvert, I get excited to have people over for burgers!
If you are looking for new ways to host, or just want to start getting to know your neighbors in small and easy ways, try a Burger Night! Pick a day and put it on the calendar. No need to get fancy. Do not let Pinterest get the best of you here. No one will complain about simple burgers and hot dogs. Trust.
My Most Basic Burgers are super simple and versatile. Turkey, beef, chicken…whatever ground meat you prefer works! Want to get creative with the seasonings? Go for it! I usually cook them in my cast iron skillet on the stove, but if you are ready to get outside and grill do that! Use this recipe as your foundation, and you can’t go wrong I promise!
